Chorus will score with Russian gem

There’s been much interest and excitement from Russia lately, looking at grown men kicking a small round object around!

However, the King’s Lynn Festival Chorus will show another side of Russia.

Performing the Rachmaninov Vespers, they will demonstrate that, culturally, Russia has very deep roots anchored in the traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Sung in Russian, the Rachmaninov Vespers is considered one of the crown jewels of Russian music and indeed of the entire choral repertoire.

It is a deeply reflective work, composed at a time of troubled Russian history, barely ten years since the Revolution, and just a year into the First World War.

This concert is next Tuesday (July 17) at 8.30pm – note the start time – in St Nicholas’ Chapel in Lynn.

Tickets at £16 (£8 for under 18s, other concessions apply) are available from the Corn Exchange on 01553 764864, or online.

n As a preview, there is also a chance to hear excerpts from this work this Sunday in a free event in Tuesday Market Place at 2.15pm.
