Sinking feeling for Hunstanton Christmas Day swim
The popular Christmas Day swim which takes place in Hunstanton has had to be postponed.
Organised by Hunstanton and District Round Table 615, the charity group dedicated to raising money for local good causes such as bonfire night, the annual festive swim and car rally, the event has been postponed due to Covid-19 concerns.
As late as yesterday. the Round Table were saying that they were confident that the event would go ahead.
But a statement on their Facebook page today reads; "It is with sadness in our hearts, that us guys at Hunstanton and District Round Table 615 regret to inform you that our Christmas Day swim on Hunstanton promenade this Saturday 25th December has been cancelled.
"We have made the difficult decision to cancel because of the risk of Covid infection among key event staff and the public.
"Due to the inability to safely distance with the unprecedented numbers of participants and expected supporters expected.
"This year's high tide will also reduce the space to safely distance and we feel that it would be unwise to continue.
"For those participants who have already collected sponsorship please hold on to it as out swim event committee are pushing on to move the fun to Easter.
"We thank you for all your support and wish you to understand that this was not an easy decision to make.
"Merry Christmas from HRT615."
The decision to cancel the swim comes after similar decisions made by swims due to be held at Lowestoft and Sea Palling.
