South Wootton church art show to mark end of Covid restrictions

With Covid restrictions set to be lifted, a West Norfolk church is set to come to life with art and craft for a week-long exhibition showcasing a wide range of talent.

More than 20 exhibitors will be taking part in the Art and Soul in The Woottons event, from July 19 to 25.

The event will be held at St Mary’s Church, South Wootton, and the doors will be open from 10am to 6pm each day with some exhibition items available for visitors to purchase.

Among the displays will be examples of paintings, photographs, wood carvings, embroidery, drawings and lots more, and they have all been created by exhibitors of all ages from the wider community.

“Art & Soul was always intended to be a biennial event but we were really uncertain about running it this year,” said Rev Dan Tansey.

“But then we thought about all the creative ways in which people have used their time during the lockdowns and thought how wonderful it would be to give people the opportunity to exhibit what they’ve made.

“And what a fantastic way to celebrate coming out of such a difficult 16 months.”

He added: “Whilst COVID restriction will hopefully be lifted, the team will make every effort to ensure the church is a safe place to visit for everyone.”

Volunteers from the church community will be manning the exhibition and there will also be refreshments, including home-made cakes, for visitors to enjoy each day.

This will be the second time the Art and Soul exhibition has been held after its debut in 2019 attracted almost 1,000 visitors who enjoyed looking at some 240 items submitted by 44 exhibitors, which also included examples of watercolour painting, model building, fly fishing, and textile work.

The week-long event two years ago also saw 48 sales, which helped to generate £2,000 for projects to improve the balcony at St Mary’s and the extensive window repairs at All Saints Church in North Wootton.
