The Downham Market Club will be closing its doors after being a mainstay in the town’s entertainment circuit since 1922.

The smoking ban and opening of a national chain have affected membership over the last few years, despite attempts to attract custom.

Manager Cassie Whisler, who has worked at the club for over 20 years, took over the lease at the beginning of this year. A new soft-play area opened a couple of months ago, but it “still wasn’t enough to attract visitors”.

Ms Whisler posted to Facebook: “It is with a heavy heart that I make the club’s final post.

“I put everything I could into trying to make it succeed along with Marion and had a great team behind me- we fought so hard.”

The opening of Wetherspoon outet, the Whalebone, in 2018 is thought to had an impact too.

The Swan pub on the High Street swapped hands in 2019, after owners felt they couldn’t compete.

Ms Whisler said: “Following the smoking ban and the opening of a national chain the club has struggled to maintain levels of members.

“After the sale there was more cash flow and the club opened the new soft play facility and renovated the building, this still wasn’t enough to attract visitors.

“Faced with these losses the club took advice from a local business rescue specialist and was advised that it could not pay all it’s debts and liquidation was the best option.”

The club was a hotspot for live music, bingo and pool over the years as well as a venue to watch sporting events.

Ms Whisler finished her Facebook post by saying: “Thank you to all our customers, I love you all.”
