Tea room is an asset to King's Lynn




Cobbles Tea Room has been in business for some six months now and owner Angela Bates, along with sister Kirsty Smith and her team of staff, are deliverinig a warm welcome.

Situated on the South Quay, in the historic Hanse House, it is tucked out of the way, and on entry the smells of freshly-baked cakes waft invitingly as you climb the stairs.

A visit to the cosy, yet spacious premises, provides a little trip back in time for afternoon tea in quaint surroundings.

Originally opened back in June by Hanseatic League historian, Dr Paul Richards, when he cut the ribbon on behalf of Angie and her team, the building has attracted tourists.

One comment from TripAdvisor said: "We found this little gem in the medieval quarter and Cobbles tea room was warm and welcoming. It serves lovely cakes and tea as tea should be served.

Angela said: "We are open six days a week and our main ethos is to provide a warm welcome and comfortable experience in a lovely environment."

"It is an extension of my kitchen at home and it so lovely that people genuinely like it which speaks volumes."

Angela and her team of nine staff have had to adapt to the difficulties the pandemic caused.

She said: "We have done very well considering and we need small independent businesses in the town. People do love this part of Lynn and it is an asset for the tourists."

With a new member of staff being trained, Christmas afternoon teas available to book and now open on Sundays, the team are busy.

She said: "On a Sunday the tearoom is available for private functions, baby showers, celebrations, afternoon teas and guests have the run of the tea room between 1-4pm.

"That's been really successful hosting events."

With a grandfather clock that chimes on the hour, antiques and classic cutlery the space offers a nostalgic feel.

Angela said: "Attention to detail is paramount, people love the crockery and may say their Nan owned similar items, so it is like stepping back in time."

Cakes, scones, dainty sandwiches, savouries are all home made on the premises which are a welcome treat for visitors.

Sister Kirsty said: "Tourists stumble across us before the town."

The Grade I-listed building is also rumoured to be haunted, with the team positive they have seen a ghost.

She said: "The girls are obsessed that they have seen a ghost, a face in the window."

"People are coming to Hanse House and coming in so we hope Cobbles is helping to put it on the map."
