Community joins together for fun day and football match to support Downham Market woman Heather Bellamy

It was a team effort by the community in Downham who came together to raise funds for Heather Bellamy at the weekend.

The Hope for Heather family fun day and charity football match were enjoyed by many at Downham Market Academy on Sunday, despite the poor weather.

The event raised about £1,400, which will support Downham woman Heather Bellamy in her bid to gather the £250,000 needed to travel to America for life-saving treatment.

Heather, a former nurse, has acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) – there is now no more treatment available to her in this country.

After two stem cell transplants did not work, her friends and family, and the community in Downham, have been organising numerous events in a bid to help reach the fundraising target.

The event was organised by Louise Page and her partner Chris Heyes, who both thanked all those who supported the day, including sponsors and stall-holders.

Chris is no stranger to fundraising for Heather, as he and Andy Lucraft-Townley previously took on a 200-mile walk from Downham to Cardiff back in April which raised more than £10,000 for the cause.

Chris added, in a post on Facebook: "Now that the event is over Andy and I are going to have a break from organising events for a little while and spend some time with our families.

"We will, of course continue to support Heather Anne Bellamy and her family and will always be there if they need anything."
