Coronavirus: Downham school closes to all pupils after staff member's positive test

A Downham primary school has been forced to close to all pupils today after a member of staff tested positive for coronavirus.

Officials at the Hillcrest school told parents this morning they would have to shut after the case was confirmed, though it is hoped pupils who are currently attending will be able to do so again next week.

Headteacher Matthew Try said: "The staff member in question was asymptomatic, and got a test due to another family member feeling unwell.

"They were isolating as the test was taken but we have had to close the school and contact all staff members and pupils who came into contact with this person. They will have to self isolate for ten days as per government guidelines."

The school is now undergoing a deep clean, with a view to re-opening to vulnerable pupils and the children of key workers on Monday morning.

Mr Try was keen to point out their resources are now stretched as they have lost six staff members and urges those who have a responsible adult at home not to bring their children into school.

He added: "We are of course still providing childcare for key workers and vulnerable children and will do our best with the situation.

"I would like to apologise for the short notice and inconvenience this morning and thank all parents for their continued support."
