Review of The Lamb & Flag at Welney: A cosy village pub with delicious homemade food and friendly staff
There's nothing better than a cosy warm restaurant at this time of year.
After driving past The Lamb & Flag in Welney several times and hearing positive things about it, I thought I would give it a try for myself, so my mum, dad and I booked a table for 6.30pm on Friday, January 12.
It was quite busy when we arrived, with plenty of people in the bar area, but we were quickly shown to our table by a friendly waiter.
The table was nicely set out and the inside of the restaurant felt very cosy, with an open fire as you walk in. It seemed like a lovely, clean, friendly, popular village pub.
When the waiter took our drink orders, my mum and I went for a regular coke (£3.15 each) and my dad went for a pint of coke (£3.65) – but there was a good range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to choose from.
We then looked at the menu, which had a variety to choose from, including starters, mains, grilled meals and sides.
My mum went for the beer-battered haddock, chunky chips, and peas with a lemon wedge for £15.50.
My dad opted for the steak and ale pie with chips, seasonal veg, and gravy for £16.75.
I decided to go for the chicken ballotine, which was a cream cheese and spinach-stuffed chicken breast served with tagliatelle in cheese sauce for £16.95.
We waited for around half an hour for our food, but when it arrived it was well-presented and looked very appealing.
I thought my food tasted very nice with lots of flavour – especially the chicken, which was not dry. However, it did fill me up very quickly so I was unable to finish the whole thing.
My dad very much enjoyed his dish and thought the pie had a lot of filling, which he liked.
My mum also enjoyed hers and was surprised at how big the fish, but thought it was a little too greasy. She said the chips were lovely and chunky – and could tell they were homemade.
However, both my parents thought the amount of chips they had was lacking and believed there should have been more for the price of the meal.
After we had finished, we were quite full – but decided we couldn't miss trying the yummy desserts on the menu.
I went for my favourite - chocolate pudding with ice cream – while my mum chose homemade cheesecake with cream and my dad opted for the chef’s crumble. Each dessert was £6.95.
When they came out, they were well-presented and we were pleased with the generous portions.
I very much enjoyed my dessert – it was very warm and spongey. You cannot go wrong with chocolate pudding.
My mum and dad both thought their choices were “scrumptious” and finished the meal off nicely.
Overall, the pub seems like a popular place with tasty food and the staff serving us were really friendly – so I would definitely recommend The Lamb and Flag to anyone looking for a nice place to eat out on a special occasion.
It is located on Main Street in Welney and offers a dine-in and a takeaway service. It serves food from Wednesday-Saturday from noon-2pm and 6pm-8pm, and on Sundays from noon-3.30pm.
