Councillor said she ‘nearly vomited’ in ‘grim’ Swaffham public toilets that have been branded unclean
Concerns have been raised over the cleanliness of Swaffham’s public toilets after one councillor said she nearly vomited while using them.
Last year, Swaffham Town Council opted to charge residents 20p to use public toilets in a bid to stop them from being vandalised.
However, Cllr Bob Couzins suggested that the toilets should be made free to use again, while discussing the “grim” state of the loos.
“We all know the state of the town’s toilets,” Cllr Couzins said during a full town council meeting last Wednesday.
“People never use them anymore, I suggest we put the toilets back to how they used to be.”
The toilets are currently open from 8am to 5pm.
A number of councillors slammed the conditions of the toilets, saying that they are not being cleaned properly.
The council pays for an separate company to clean the loos.
Cllr Caroline Ellerbeck added that “none of the toilets are disabled friendly”.
She said: “I have nearly vomited when using them.”
Cllr Jill Skinner added: “We should be complaining about the cleaning company.”
Cllr Couzins pointed out that public toilets in Lynn, Hunstanton and other surrounding areas are “clean”.
The council referred the matter to be discussed at an open spaces committee meeting.
