Countdown appearance by Wolferton man

Tony Bartlett, from Wolferton, appeared on the iconic daytime quiz show Countdown that was aired on December 10.

The episode on Channel 4 was hosted by Anne Robinson, with Susie Dent and Craig Charles the TV actor and radio star in dictionary corner and a heavily-pregnant Rachel Riley working out the numbers.

Tony's opponent was Janet Noe, from Croydon, and it was level-pegging for a while in the game.

Anne asked Tony, who was introduced as being from Lynn, if he lived near the Queen and asked him about being a retired chef when he used to cook in a convent.

Still even-stevens in the game Tony talked to Anne about his role as a dance host on cruise ships, offering the chance for people to dance the waltz and foxtrot with a partner.

When asked about his favourite dance he said: "The salsa. All the time these hips can move I'll carry on doing the salsa."

Tony did well with the letters and numbers and got the seven letter word 'outings'.

Susie explained Shakespeare's reference to a wild goose chase in Romeo and Juliet meaning an uncertain outcome.

Anne chatted further with Tony about living near Sandringham and whether or not the royal family pay a visit to Wolferton, one of seven villages that are on the Sandringham estate.

Tony said: "We do see the Queen at times."

With Rachel telling Tony that he picked the most difficult combination of numbers, ie four from the top and two little ones, she congratulated him saying 'nicely done' when he again got a successful result in the numbers round.

Unfortunately for Tony his opponent took the lead and won the conundrum, solving the jumbled letters with the answer 'displaced'.

Anne was sad to see Tony go and said: "You go away with a goody bag. I am very disappointed, I wanted you to take me in a samba round the studio floor."

Tony said: "I am disappointed too, I would have liked to have done that."

The episode screened December 10 can be watched on All Four.
