A fire crew is expected to remain at the scene of a major blaze near Swaffham, overnight, service chiefs say.
The fire broke out in a warehouse on the old North Pickenham airfield shortly after 11.15am today. At its height, six fire engines were at the scene and explosions, believed to be caused by propane gas cylinders inside the building, have been heard. Residents were also warned to keep their doors and windows closed.
A Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said a short time ago that one fire crew remained at the scene on a “watching brief” and is likely to remain there overnight.
The blaze happened on the second day of a four-day strike by members of the Fire Brigades’ Union as part of an ongoing national dispute with the government over pensions.
