Cycling team aim to ride 197-miles around Norfolk in just one day
Middle aged Men in Lycra Tour of Norfolk (Mamilton) are tomorrow taking on a 197-mile cycle challenge around the county.
The team, who are raising money for East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAAA), is aiming to cycling around Norfolk in just 24-hours.
Riding in memory of Phil Beeton, who died in a road accident in October 2015, Mamilton is aiming to smash last year’s fundraising total of £12,155.
Organiser of Phil’s Ride, David Fletcher said: “We are all set for this year’s Phil’s Ride. Last year, we cycled 197-miles around Norfolk in four days but this year we are hoping to do that in one day.
“We are setting off from the Old White Bell, in Southery, at one minute past midnight on Saturday. We will be riding as soon as our quiz night finishes, that’s the plan.”
Phil’s Ride was launched in 2016 as a way to raise money for the EAAA, who saved Phil’s nephew, Jack, by airlifting him to Addenbrokes Hospital.
He added: “None of us are cyclists so this is going to be a huge challenge.
“The plan is to stay together although we are all different ages and abilities.
“We may have to make a few stops, but we are aiming to complete it by mid afternoon on Saturday.
“So far Phil’s Ride has gone from strength to strength.
“Last year’s total of £12,155.22 was an exceptional amount raised and we felt a little cheeky setting last years target 1p higher than the year before which raised £6,205.22.
“However, we’re not to break with tradition, so this year’s target is once again, 1p higher than the previous.”
The Mamilton’s quiz night is set to take place at the Old White Bell, in Southery, today, from 9pm. The team is welcoming anyone interested to come down, join the quiz and see them off on their way.
“The team would very much like your support to see them on their way, so please come along to the Old White Bell, Southery, from 9pm where Rose and Claire have prepared a quiz in aid of Phil’s Ride,” said Mr Fletcher.
“It’s a little tricky to have an exact schedule for the return of Team Mamilton, however we’re hoping to fix a live link up in the Old White Bell, so simply pop along to view the latest location of the whole team.”
