Death of person hit by train near Wiggenhall St Germans not being treated suspiciously, British Transport Police says

The death of a person hit by a train yesterday is not being treated as suspicious, it has been confirmed.

The Great Northern service reported the incident occurred between Lynn and Ely, and the British Transport Police (BPT) have since confirmed it was near St Germans.

It appears as though the death was a suicide, with Great Northern describing it as a “tragic incident” and posting: “If you or someone close to you has been affected by this or any incident, there is always someone to talk to.”

People using trains travelling from stations in Lynn, Watlington, Downham and Littleport were advised to use an alternative route, although the line reopened in the early evening.

“We were called to an area of the line in Wiggenhall St Germans at around 12.50pm on Thursday, following reports of a casualty on the tracks,” a BPT spokesperson said.

“Officers attended along with paramedics but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
