Watlington pub gets the diners' vote
Covid comeback efforts at the Angel, Watlington, have been given a big boost by a prestigious hospitality award coming its way.
News of the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice award came completely out of the blue.
“It was a total surprise. We had no idea,” said a very proud Emily Phipps.
Emily and Richard Crouch are landlords at the village pub and, while this is not their first award, they are especially pleased with it because it is awarded by customers and puts the Angel in the top ten per cent of restaurants on the Tripadvisor site worldwide.
Last year The Angel landed awards from the high end lifestyle magazine LUXlife awards including Best Fine Dining Pub Norfolk and the LUX Culinary Excellence Award.
Lux based its decision on the emphasis on the menu of local produce as well as the fact that all the produce is home-made in house by Richard, an award-winning chef.
Since taking over two years ago, the couple have totally refurbished the pub inside and out and turned it into a dining pub with an impressive reputation. A new children’s play area has been installed and events for the community have been held there, such as the village fete.
Emily said that Covid was a blow to their plans. “We have about 50 years experience between us in this trade and have never known anything like this in all that time. It is quite unprecedented”.
But she said that things are picking up again and they are doing everything they can for their staff, customers and everyone involved – including introducing their Big Green Egg indoor barbecue to add something different to the dining experience.
“Getting the Travellers' Choice Award is a brilliant boost, especially as it is based on how customers have seen us”, she said.
