Downham community revels in joy of carnival day
The community of Downham came together yesterday for one of the biggest events on the town’s annual calendar.
The spring bank holiday is carnival day and a host of community groups took part in the traditional parade of floats which preceded a packed afternoon of entertainment at the Howdale.
The programme included a spectacular cycle display, plus performances by the Lowestoft Dog Agility display team, the Legacy dance troupe, the East Angles Brass Band, Russ Welch and his Zumba dancing team and the Downham Marquettes baton twirling squad.
The carnival is a key part of the annual Downham Festival, which is now in its 45th year and continues until Sunday.
This year’s programme has been based around the theme of Showtime. A bucket collection was taken during the parade, with proceeds going towards the organisation of next year’s festival.
Event organisers have thanked Bearts of Stowbridge and Heygates of Downham for their support of the float parade by providing vehicles and the assembly point respectively.
