Father Christmas is making house calls to lucky youngsters in Downham thanks to members of a popular club.

Members of Downham Lions have re-instated an old tradition of Santa Claus visiting youngsters in their homes after a gap of five to six years.

Parents will now be able to contact the Lions in order to arrange a special visit between Monday, December 14 and Saturday, December 19.

Santa’s helper Chris Morten is pleased with the response so far but says there are still appointments available for youngsters to share their wishes directly with the man in red.

Mr Morten said: “We used to do it some years ago and decided to re-create it this year.

“It is lovely when the children open the door and see Santa standing there.”

A suggested donation for the visit is £5, which will be used to help good causes.

Club treasurer John Fox said: “We aim to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves in whatever way.

“You can go to a garden centre or a superstore to see Santa but it is really special to have him visit your home.”

The Lions have raised £500 for charity during the recent Christmas Lights Switch on event in Downham.

Members, including Colin Bulley and David Long, ran a grotto in the town hall along with a baked potato stand.

The Lions will be outside the town’s Tesco store on Monday and Tuesday, December 21 and 22 They will also be running a collection outside the Morrison’s store on Wednesday, December 23.
