A student from Nelson Academy has come top of the pack in a national photography competition for primary school pupils.

Zain Nyarko, 11, won the contest organised by PiXL – a partnership of more than 1,500 schools which work together to “improve students’ life chances” – for his photo of a cat.

Zain travelled to London to collect his certificate alongside staff and other pupils who were nominated for their hard work and improvement.

Principal Louise Ward said: “The year six students who attended the PiXL event were nominated by staff at Nelson Academy for their exceptional work ethic and commitment throughout the last academic year.

“It’s fantastic to see them all receiving certificates for their achievements and absolutely brilliant that Zain also won the photo competition – an additional celebration!”
