Downham Market's Marquettes Baton Twirlers achieve best results of past 20 years
Marquettes Baton Twirlers of Downham achieved their best Area Championship results of the past 20 years on March 2.
With a team of just seven athletes, aged between 10 to 16, they achieved 12 Area Championship titles and 23 additional placings between them.
The championship titles were: Caitlin Tabor – senior fancy strut, Charlotte Davies – senior dance twirl and senior solo twirl, Grace Meadows-Flint – junior two dance twirl, two baton and duo, Scarlette Burton – junior one, solo twirl, two baton and duo, and Anne-Marie Mussard – juvenile solo twirl, two baton and fancy strut.
Coach Charlotte Cornish said: “This team of young athletes works extremely hard and are very dedicated to their sport.
“They constantly delight and surprise the coaches with their talent and training ethic.”
Five of the team will now represent their club, Marquettes, and area, East Anglia, at the National Championships at Easter.
On top of this, Scarlette Burton will become the first Marquettes athlete to represent England when she takes part in the World Baton Twirling Federation International Cup in France this August.
Scarlette has been selected by the British Baton Twirling Sports Association to represent her country in the discipline of Two Baton in the junior women’s section.
Charlotte said the youngster has put “so much effort and focus into her twirling career over the last few years”.
She added: “From a coach’s point of view it is an honour to see your athlete excel into this level of international recognition.
“To know how far she has come from her first twirling lesson at three-years-old to now putting on an England tracksuit and taking to the floor on a world stage at the age of 11.”
Charlotte said the club will be holding fundraising activities to support Scarlette, and any donations or sponsorships would also be gratefully received.
