A West Norfolk supermarket will be bereft of women next month when more than half the store’s staff unite in the fight against cancer.
Fifty three female employees from Tesco in Downham – a total of 57 per cent of the store’s staff – will be taking on Cancer Research UK’s women-only Race for Life at Houghton Hall on Tuesday, July 21.
The group will be joining thousands of other women at the event in a bid to raise £1,000 and also to support a colleague battling the disease, and her daughter Jacqui Curtis, who also works at the store.
The pink army will be picked up from the London Road supermarket in a double-decker bus donated by Stagecoach, with the words ‘Team Madge’ in honour of the staff member lit up in the destination display.
They will then be driven to the event, where they will walk, jog and run the 5km distance before coming back together at the end for a picnic in the scenic hall grounds.
Rhona Barber, one of the store’s customer service assistant, said: “There are 93 people on the store payroll, so to have 53 people taking part is pretty amazing. There will be a lot of men on shift store that night!
“We wanted to do the event to raise money but to also show our support to one of our ladies who works here who is fighting cancer, and also her daughter Jacqui, who works at the store as well.”
Staff have already raised £80 towards their fundraising target thanks to a recent book stall, and they are also holding pink weekends in the run up to the race with a host of dressing-up and fundraising fun.
The first weekend is being held from today to Sunday, with another two from July 10 to 12 and July 17 to 19.
The store has also got a fundraising pampering hamper, worth £40, up for grabs, with raffle tickets on sale to customers for a suggested minimum donation of £1 a ticket.
Another hamper, full of toiletries, wine and other goodies and worth £60, is available to win to anyone who signs up for the Race for Life at Houghton Hall while in-store. Entrants will be put into a draw to win.
Anyone who may have been put off entering the event through lack of transport can also take advantage of one of the few remaining seats on Tesco’s double-decker team bus.
“Anyone who hasn’t got transport to the event can join us if they wish, for a donation to Race for Life,” said Ms Barber.
