Dozens of tickets issued to illegal parkers at Bawsey Pits
Up to 30 tickets a day are being issued to drivers illegally parking on the road past a beauty spot.
Council chiefs say staff have been threatened and abused while enforcing the rules on Gayton Road, Bawsey, next to the Bawsey Pits.
They say they are working with the police to tackle the issue and have warned that they will not tolerate such conduct.
Although the pits are a well-known attraction during the summer months, the road past it, the B1145, is classed as a clearway, which means that drivers cannot park on it or the adjacent grass verges.
There have previously been problems caused by vehicles parking on both sides of the road and making it difficult for traffic to pass.
The Lynn News has also been contacted by one reader this week who suggested the issue was getting worse.
But, in a report published ahead of next Thursday’s West Norfolk Council meeting, cabinet member Kathy Mellish said civil enforcement officers were visiting the site regularly.
She said: “On occasions, they have issued 30 tickets in a single day which demonstrates the scale of the problem in this area.
“Our staff have been subjected to threats and abuse whilst undertaking their work and I stress, it is a matter of safety to keep this road vehicle-free.
“Anyone driving along that road will know how dangerous it can be especially if another driver is not sticking to the speed limit or if people/children walk onto the road to their cars, other drivers will have to cross the central line to avoid them.
“We are actively working with the police to ensure this area is kept as free as possible, but I would ask for everyone to help spread the message that, we will not tolerate aggression toward our staff, they are doing a job to keep us safe, and illegal parking will result in a fine.”
