Lynn drink driver crashed after swerving to avoid deer
A drink-driver who had a collision after swerving to avoid a deer has been banned from the roads.
A Vauxhall Insignia being driven by Timothy Barrell (35) hit bollards outside Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, town magistrates heard on Thursday.
It happened in Gayton Road at about 12.30am on July 2.
The court heard that there were two passengers in the car.
Prosecutor Emma Pocknell said police were called to the collision.
“He had glazed eyes and tripped over walking,” she added.
Barrell was arrested after failing a roadside breath test, later blowing 64 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.
The defendant, of Littleport Street, Lynn, had no convictions before pleading guilty to the offence.
In mitigation, he said: “It was a mistake on my behalf. I was talking a girl home from Hunstanton.
“I saw a muntjac and went into the bollards just after the roundabout.”
Barrell was disqualified for 17 months, which can be cut with successful completion of a drink-driver rehabilitation course.
He was also fined £463 and ordered to pay £185 victim surcharge and £105 costs.
