Two long letters doubting significant climate change (Sheridan Payne November 9, Alan Mudge November 16) deserve reply, The first presents a series of points for specific response.

The recent average temperature rise (about 1C) does indeed seem modest, but 2014-2020 are uninterrupted hottest years. Unfortunately, effects (ice melt, huge forest fires, storms, refugees from arid zones, etc) are not evenly spread.

Identifying someone (Bolin) who in the 1970s switched belief from future cooling to warming rather confirms the emerging evidence. Since then predictions have indeed changed (our actions continually ‘engineer’ the planet), but mostly they get worse (delayed by fear of being ‘alarmist’?).
