Downham Market parkrun organisers are encouraging more people to get involved
Organisers of a town parkrun are raising awareness of the free event - and are hoping to recruit more volunteers.
Downham Academy parkrun is a free, weekly 5km event for runners of all ages and abilities which is held every Saturday morning.
The run begins and ends at the school, taking participants through scenic routes in the town.
A key factor behind the execution of the Downham event is the team of dedicated volunteers.
With around 30 volunteers and eight-run directors, their collective efforts ensure the smooth running of the event each week.
Volunteers take on various roles, including timekeeping, marshalling, and barcode scanning.
Adam Bimpson, run director, said: “The essence of our parkrun lies in its simplicity and accessibility.
“There are no fees, no need for fancy equipment, and no pressure to perform - just a welcoming space where you can set your own pace and achieve personal goals, whether that’s running the whole distance, walking, or cheering from the sidelines.
“Raising the profile of Downham Market Academy parkrun is about more than increasing participation numbers – it’s about enriching the community fabric.
“By spreading the word and inviting friends, family, and colleagues to join, we can ensure the sustainability and growth of this beloved event.
“Together, we can create a vibrant, healthy, and connected community where everyone feels welcome and valued.”
Getting involved with Downham Academy parkrun is simple - if you are interested in running, you can join the group every Saturday morning.
There is no need to pre-register – just turn up and be ready to run or walk. For those looking to volunteer, the team will welcome your support. You can choose from a variety of roles depending on your interests and availability.
Mr Bimpson added: “Regular physical activity has numerous benefits, from improving cardiovascular health and boosting mental well-being to fostering a sense of community belonging.
“Participating in our parkrun can also be a great way to meet new people and become more involved in the local community.
“It’s an event that transcends age, ability, and background, uniting individuals in a shared pursuit of health and happiness.”
