Leverington woman Shanell Carman sentenced for driving offences in Emneth
A 25-year-old has been handed a community order after a committing a raft of driving offences while speeding away from the police.
Shanell Carman, of Donington Park in Leverington, appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where she was sentenced having pleaded guilty to them all at an earlier date.
She had admitted drug-driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without insurance and while disqualified.
She committed the offences in July last year, while she was already banned from driving.
Police had been following Carman on a main road at Emneth when they noticed she was uninsured, and signalled for her to pull over.
She was swerving across the road and failed to stop, with officers noting that she was “incredibly jerky” and was tailgating other drivers.
Carman then sped up significantly in a bid to evade the police vehicle, with the officers forced to switch positions so the more experienced driver could lead the chase.
She eventually came to a stop on Church Road in Emneth, and the court previously heard she had been taking a meal to her grandfather at the time and had stopped when she arrived at his address.
A subsequent drugs test revealed Carman had 4.2mcg of cannabis per litre of blood in her system. The legal limit to drive is 2mcg.
Mitigating, solicitor Ruth Johnson said Carman has been a “bag of nerves” since her case began, and described her as a “worrier” and “over-thinker”.
She was “incredibly relieved” when magistrates opted not to hand her a jail sentence.
However, Carman was made the subject of an 18-month community order, which will require her to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and 12 rehabilitation activity requirement sessions.
She has also been disqualified from driving for 15 months, and will pay a £114 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs.
