A military contractor has applied for a licence to manufacture explosives at RAF Marham.
BAE Systems has applied to Norfolk Fire and Rescue for permission to carry out the work.
A spokesperson said: “BAE Systems is contracted to carry out maintenance of aircraft canopies, which contain a small amount of explosive chord.
“This activates to shatter the canopy if pilots are ejecting. We are therefore required to apply for a licence to carry out this maintenance activity.
“While the process is classed as explosive manufacturing, in fact the only activity BAE Systems undertakes is repair and maintenance on the canopies.”
