It’s the end of an era for a Swaffham community group as it paid tribute to the departing organiser of the town’s weekly indoor market.
Maureen Rutland, who has co-ordinated the sales at the Assembly Rooms for the past eight years, is taking semi-retirement and presided over her final market before stepping down from her post last Friday.
However, despite her decision, she still intends to keep her own stall at the market in the ballroom.
During her time in the post, officials estimate Maureen has attracted well over 100 stalls to the market, which was launched after the previous market organised by the town’s Women’s Institute ended.
Dennis Tallon, chairman of the Iceni Partnership which hosts the market, was the group’s manager when she was appointed to lead the market.
And he described her record in office as a “fantastic achievement.”
Organisation of the market will now be led by a group of senior traders headed by Haydn Eagle, who offers home-grown plants.
Mr Eagle can be contacted on 07957 862239.
