Film director thanks King's Lynn for 'cooperation'

The director of a new Charles Dickens adaptation has thanked people in Lynn for their assistance while scenes have been filmed in the town this week.

Armando Iannucci, who has previously worked on The Thick of It, the Alan Partridge series and Veep, made the comments as production got underway for The Personal History of David Copperfield.

On Friday, he said on Twitter: “Thanks to everyone in King’s Lynn for all their help and cooperation.”

Crowds gathered in their dozens by the Custom House on Thursday and the Saturday Market Place on Friday as the town was transported back to the 19th century for the film sets.

Onlookers were able to catch a glimpse of props, actors and members of the crew, and were perhaps hoping to spot some of the film’s big names – which includes Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton, Peter Capaldi, Dev Patel and Ben Whishaw, to name a few.

It was not just members of the public who were in positive spirits though, with one of the cast members sharing his thoughts on the town.

Aneurin Barnard, who also starred in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, tweeted on Thursday: “King’s Lynn is beautiful”.

West Norfolk Council also showed its appreciation to those who helped on social media.

A post on their Twitter account said: “A Friday afternoon shout out to everyone who has helped make the David Copperfield filming possible in King’s Lynn this week.”

It added a “particular” thanks to the East Anglian division of the Environment Agency and the council’s contractors for preparing the Purfleet ahead of the work.
