Five arrests made in Downham Market on police action day including two immigration offences
Two people were arrested in Downham over immigration offences during a police action day held in the town yesterday.
They were two of five arrests made on the day, which also saw 40 vehicles stopped for a number of offences.
The other three arrests were for drug-driving.
A total of 115 drivers were caught speeding, with the highest speed recorded being 109mph.
Policing teams came together with hopes of reducing road casualties and disrupting criminality.
The action day saw various vehicles, including cars and light and heavy goods vehicles, being escorted to a designated check site in Downham which led to five vehicles immediately being seized.
Police dealt with seven seatbelt offences, two number plate offences, nine accounts of a vehicle with excess weight, three vehicles with an insecure load, one person driving while on their mobile phone, four tyre offences, two with no insurance, four window tint offences, one driving without a licence, one driving without an MOT, two driving with no tax and seven “minor defects” offences.
Inspector Will Drummond of the Joint Roads and Armed Policing said: “Our aim is to reduce the number of those killed or seriously injured on the roads.
“Action days allow us to review a sample of vehicles travelling in the area and advise drivers of issues which could increase their chances of being involved in a collision.
“It is very disappointing to see three drivers were arrested for being under the influence of drugs and reinforces the need for such operations.”
A number of TORs were issued as part of this initiative, which could result in fines and/or points on drivers’ licences. Anyone with existing points on their licence risks losing it completely.
