Flagship Fakenham swimming pool project set for approval this week

A flagship project for a new swimming pool is set for approval despite a brass band “wagging” up backlash in frustration at losing its practice space.

Officials have given the green light for Fakenham’s £11million ‘flash’ project to go ahead, with the final decision due this Thursday.

The scheme also includes an extension of the existing leisure centre and refurbishment of the changing areas and studio space at the Trap Lane site.

However, part of the work will require the demolition of a pavilion owned by the town council.

The building has served as a community space for several years and was used by Fakenham’s 140-year-old brass band.

It led to the group issuing 15 objection letters to North Norfolk District Council, complaining about the loss of its home in what has been called an “orchestrated campaign” to save the pavilion by the band’s members.

Despite the protestations, the brass enthusiasts have since left Trap Lane and are now rehearsing at Colkirk Parish Hall in the nearby village.

The demolition of the pavilion has also been complicated due to three pipistrelle bats roosting there and it will require further surveys and a special licence before any work can begin.

Fakenham has not had a swimming pool for more than a decade.

The new facility is made possible through a Government grant first announced by the previous Conservative government but later approved by Labour.

In addition to a new pool, the extension to the Trap Lane recreation ground will include a 55-station fitness suite and a refurbishment of the existing studio spaces and changing areas.

A 3G pitch will also be developed and will be able to offer an all-weather outdoor sports facility, but this is subject to a separate application.

Councillors will meet on Thursday to vote on the application.
