Former Swaffham town crier Edwin Godden handed trial date following child sex offence charges




A former town crier charged with historic child sex offences has been handed a trial date.

Edwin Godden, 53, of Queen Street in Swaffham, is accused of four counts of penetrative sexual activity with a child.

He has also been charged with one count of rape, with all the alleged offences dating back to 2010.

Godden appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, May 14, and was bailed to return to Norwich Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday).

He has now been handed a trial date on December 14, 2026 - 18 months from now.

Godden is a former town crier in Swaffham, as well as a prominent church figure. However, he no longer holds a church trusteeship.
