Downham Market town councillor and former mayor John Doyle who was ‘champion of the community’ has died
A former councillor who served as mayor four times and bought “a wealth of knowledge and wisdom”, to a town, has died.
Downham town councillor John Doyle, who passed away on Tuesday afternoon, was described as a “champion of the community” by his fellow councillors.
He held the position of mayor on four separate occasions, from 2007-08, 2009-10, 2014-15 and 2023-24, and served as a town councillor for more than 25 years.
During his time as mayor, Cllr Doyle raised money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and Downham Dementia while in office.
Current Downham Mayor and Cllr Doyle’s successor Cllr Barry Hobbs said: “John Doyle was a much valued colleague and friend to all the councillors.
“I remember with great appreciation the support he gave me when I became Mayor. His contribution to the work of the council over so many years has been invaluable.
“John’s dedication to the Downham community was unwavering and we all owe him our deepest gratitude.”
A spokesperson from the town council added: “John brought a wealth of local knowledge and wisdom to the role of councillor, often providing technical advice, when required.
“John was a champion of the community and was a member for over 25 years.
“The Council will miss John's kindness, compassion and unwavering support. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
