Touching tribute book written by the daughter of ballroom legend Peggy Spencer MBE, star of Come Dancing about the dancer's vibrant life
The life of iconic ballroom dancing star Peggy Spencer has been published by her daughter in a tribute book called Dancing Through Life.
Helena Anderson, who lived with her mother in Lynn, has spent the last five years putting together the biographical masterpiece, complete with beautiful photographs of Peggy in her dancing days.
Peggy, who died in 2016, grew up in South East London and lived through the Second World War. Her early years were a struggle, however the determined dancer overcame these challenges and carved herself a very successful career as one of the country's leading dance teachers and choreographers.
Peggy's ballroom formation team was twice invited to dance for the Queen at Buckingham Palace and she choreographed a dance team for legendary band The Beatles in their video for Your Mother Should Know.
The ballroom aficionado rose to fame appearing on the television show Come Dancing. Come Dancing was a ballroom dancing competition show that ran on and off on the BBC from 1949to 1998 as the pre-cursor to the much loved Strictly Come Dancing.
Along with her husband Frank, Peggy was awarded the MBE for her services to the dancing world in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year, so it only seems fitting, that in the year of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, that Peggy's tribute is published.
Helena tells of her mother's travels around the world, teaching judging and running workshops to promote the “English style of dance” as it was called a the time.
Her daughter tells of the many celebrities Peggy worked with during those years, such as The Beatles, Bruce Forsyth, Cilla Black, Rudolph Nureyev, The Two Ronnies, and dance band legends as Victor Sylvester and Edmundo Ross.
The last eighteen years of her life were spent with her daughter in Lynn, and the finalchapter is devoted to the many achievements she made during that time, and the friendships and associations she made in the town.
Helena said:"My mum treasured her amazing year as deputy Mayoress and as President of the Osteoporosis Society."
