Stoke Ferry fuel company Big K is celebrating it’s 10-acre expansion
A fuel company is celebrating after the grand opening of its new expansion.
Big K distributes fuel nationwide, providing wood, charcoal, firelighters and kindling for both professional and personal use.
Established in 1981, it has remained a family-owned and run company across two sites in Tottenham, in London and Stoke Ferry.
Pre-lockdown it became apparent to the Stoke Ferry branch that the success of the business meant it would soon outgrow its eight acres of land.
Operations director Simon Wood, who has been working at Big K for eight years, said: “The space was always an issue, and the products we were making couldn’t keep up with sales. Introducing more land will make production smoother, quicker and easier.”
The land, formerly a pig farm, was bought at the start of Covid-19. However, setbacks such as lockdown and the cost of living crisis had meant that the opening only happened on Tuesday.
Simon added: “The opening went very well, we stopped all production to allow the team members to attend. We also had a few people from the Tottenham site who were free for the day come up.
“The extra land gives us the opportunity to expand which we weren’t able to do before”
Company owner Chris Kleanthous attended the opening and cut the ribbon.
An extra 10 acres of land has been added, thanks to the expansion, which will allow for materials that were once stored off-site to be stored on-site.
The branch’s new log line will reduce timber imports, to help the company fulfil its dream of distributing only FSC-certified Grown in Britain wood, kiln-dried using a biomass boiler fueled by offcuts from the log-making process.
Although the plans for the site are not yet fully complete due to construction cost inflation, the main elements are operational with four warehouses and an office block to be completed in the future.
