A church playgroup is to close down following its final session next week.
Gaywood Methodist Playgroup will have its last gathering on Wednesday, July 20, as the group has a shortage of children due to start in September.
A member of the Playgroup Committee said that they were sad to announce their closure, but the lack of numbers meant they could not keep going.
A closing down sale of all pre-school books, toys and equipment is due to take place on Thursday, July 21 between 10am and 12pm in the Gaywood Church Rooms.
Committee member Stephen Coote said: “We would like to thank all the children, parents, staff and helpers who have enabled our group to continue running for all of these years since it first opened in 1968.”
Playgroup manager Christine Cannell said that a mixture of small numbers, sustainability and the changing world has brought about the closure of the playgroup.
She said that when she first started working at the group, mothers did not go to work until their children were at school, but now that is not the case and children go to nursery earlier in life, which has meant smaller numbers for pre-schools such as Gaywood Methodist Playgroup.
Mrs Cannell added: “We have been a community group which has welcomed children in to help them get prepared for school and to encourage them to become more independent.”
The group had been running for 41 years, and in 2012 it expanded to five mornings a week.
