Officials at the Downham Market Academy say their students' GCSE results are testament to their own ambition.

Many students collected a string of top 9 and 8 grades when they received the crucial papers this morning.

And senior deputy head Mark Eastwood paid tribute to their work during course programmes heavily disrupted by coronavirus.

He said: "Their resilience and dedication has been inspirational over what has been a very challenging and unpredictable two years.

"They have shown great determination to succeed and adaptability in the ever-changing circumstances that they have had to navigate their way through GCSE courses.

"The results that our students have earned today are a testament to the ambition that they have all demonstrated to do their best and not settle for anything less."

No collective data has been released, but Mr Eastwood said every student could use their grades as a basis for future successes.

He added: "With so many success stories it is hard to pick out individuals but special mention must go to Lauren John (seven 9s; three 8s) and Isabelle Driver (seven 9s; two 8s) and Emily Banks, Maisie Parker, Megan North and Kelly Yu who all achieved a mixture of grade 8 and 9 across all their subjects."

Many students are set to move from the academy site to the sister Athena Sixth Form College when the new academic year begins next month. Applications for places are still open.
