Improvements costing £40,000 in January to a Downham Market bus stop

A town bus stop is to be upgraded to “gold standard” when work, costing an estimated £40,000, starts next week.

Norfolk County Council will be upgrading the existing northbound stop on Old Maltings Way in Downham. The revamp is due to start on Friday, January 3 for two weeks, weather permitting.

The county council has said: “Old Maltings Way, the road through the town car park, will be closed to northbound through traffic for the duration of the works. Traffic will still be able to filter into the surrounding car park from both Bridge Street and Paradise Road. This is necessary to provide a safe working area while the bus stop is upgraded.”

This scheme has been made possible by funding from the Department for Transport’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

The bus stop will be widened with a new straightened crossing to comply with the Equality Act 2010. Also, solar powered real-time information displays to show live bus times will be installed.

The northbound bus stop will also be closed while work takes place and passengers are asked to use the nearby Bridge Street stop for services towards Lynn until the work is complete.
