Groundbreaking conference in Swaffham will focus on improving energy efficiency in historic buildings

Homeowners, landlords and professionals are being invited to a groundbreaking conference in Swaffham focused on improving energy efficiency in traditionally-built properties.

Organised by the ‘Swaffham - A Historic Market Town’ project in collaboration with the Norfolk Climate Change Partnership’s Norfolk Net Zero Communities, this one-day event will take place next Wednesday (March 19) and is now open for registration.

Through funding from Innovate UK and the partners behind the Swaffham project, the free workshop will provide practical guidance and expert insights into retrofitting historic buildings while preserving their character.

Attendees at the town’s Assembly Rooms will hear from leading organisations, including Historic England, the National Trust, and Matter of Place Architects.

Key highlights of the event include:

• Expert talks explaining case studies and best practice for making older buildings more energy-efficient

• A practical session looking at what homeowners want to improve in their own properties and potential barriers

• A lunchtime heritage tour showcasing Swaffham’s historic buildings

• Opportunities to inform future retrofit initiatives in Norfolk through participant feedback

Cllr Paul Claussen, Breckland Council’s executive member for economic development and growth, said: “This conference is a fantastic opportunity for homeowners and landlords to gain valuable insights into how they can make their properties more energy-efficient while respecting the historical integrity of their buildings.

“Retrofitting traditional homes is essential in our drive for a greener, more sustainable Norfolk, whilst delivering on our aim of making Swaffham’s unique heritage the economic driver for the town.”

Greg Pearson, partnership manager for the Norfolk Climate Change Partnership, added: “We are excited to be supporting this event.

“Homeowners and landlord who have traditional buildings experience a real challenge knowing how they can retrofit their property to make it more energy efficient, affordable and cosy.

“We hope that events like this will show them what steps they can take to make their properties work better for them and inspire them to take action.”

The event is open to homeowners, landlords, councillors, and officers across Norfolk.

Spaces are limited, so those interested are encouraged to reserve their tickets as soon as possible.
