Popular event organised by Hunstanton Round Table raises funds for King’s Lynn hospital

A coastal based group has raised £1,000 towards exercise sessions aimed at helping vulnerable hospital patients.

The proceeds came from the annual Christmas Day Swim organised by Hunstanton and District Round Table 615 with the donation going towards funding exercise sessions at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Lynn.

The money was donated to the hospital’s EPIC Moves, Better Lives appeal. It will go towards tailor-made exercise therapy for frail and cognitively impaired patients and will also allow therapists to share their expertise enabling the hospital to extend the service to more patients.

The Round Table, open to men aged 18-45, organises several fundraising events, with the festive swim and spectacular Hunstanton cliff top fireworks display drawing the largest crowds.

Hundreds of swimmers, many wearing festive fancy dress, braved the freezing-cold December sea, to raise money for a host of good causes.

Robert Brown, community services officer and treasurer of the group, said: “Not only did we want to support the fantastic work of our local hospital, but some of our members family are either suffering from dementia or have suffered from dementia, so this appeal really struck a chord with the group.

“We know that our donation will go some way towards helping make a real difference to all the patients and will help continue the fantastic work that Dr Katie Honney and her team are carrying out.”

Dr Katie Honney, the clinical director for integrated care of the older person at the QEH, added: “I can’t thank the Hunstanton and District Round Table 615 team enough for their extremely generous donation to our EPIC moves appeal.

“This will allow us to provide ongoing exercise therapy to those living with frailty and cognitive impairment whilst receiving inpatient care – an intervention which we know improves longer term cognitive and functional outcomes. Thank you once again!”
