The month of May is a great time for families to relax and enjoy the double bank holiday break, but NHS Blood and Transplant is reminding blood donors in Fakenham to keep their appointment to help patient needs throughout the month.

Blood donations are always needed as hospitals in England require around 6,000 units of blood every day to treat a range of patients, so it is essential to keep stock levels healthy.

Michelle Laserna, senior marketing coordinator at NHSBT, said: “It is always important to ensure blood stock levels are maintained, and especially so as they can be more vulnerable around public holidays.

“So we are urging people to please keep your appointment, in particular if your blood group is O negative or A negative.

“Around 85 per cent of donors are able to keep their appointments, however if you do need to change you’re appointment please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer that time to someone else.

“A huge thanks to donors in Fakenham as without your generous donation it wouldn’t be possible to help to save the lives of those who need it.”

While many people think that blood is used mainly for accidents and emergencies, donated blood is vital for a wide variety of life-saving procedures.

A blood transfusion can help to save the life of a new mother or it could be used to treat blood disorders, such as sickle cell anaemia and Thalassaemia.
