Smithdon High School in Hunstanton could get temporary teaching facilities amid repair works

A school could get a set of new temporary classrooms if plans are given the go-ahead.

A planning application has been submitted by Terry Hill on behalf of the Department for Education and its contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland.

If approved, Smithdon High School in Hunstanton could get two temporary portable cabin structures and car parking to accommodate general teaching classrooms for up to three years. One would be single-storey and the other two-storey.

A design and access statement submitted by Jestico and Whiles states that the school needs to remain operational for the duration of separate construction works, which brings the need for temporarily re-housing a number of school spaces.

It said: “The temporary structure is required so the school continues to serve its local community and remain in use, while the conservation and refurbishment works are undertaken.

“The aim of the repair works to the main school buildings is to ensure the long-term use of the building is retained as a school for future generations of Hunstanton and the wider area.”

There would be two blocks of temporary accommodation. The two-storey block will be located south of the other existing teaching blocks, as far away from listed structures as possible while remaining within the school site.

The single-storey administration block, with a reception area, will be located over part of the multi-use games area to the east of the main building EFAA.

The statement also says that once the construction work at the school is completed, the temporary accommodation will be disassembled.

The site area where this will be located, both grass and asphalt, will be “re-landscaped and made good”.
