Staff at The Golden Lion Hotel in Hunstanton are delighted after reopening following impressive refurbishment

A historic town hotel is looking better than ever after an impressive revamp costing more than £1million.

The Golden Lion Hotel in Hunstanton reopened in late March after a raft of exciting changes - and staff are delighted with the end result.

Strata Architects was at the heart of the refurbishment, which started with a full ground floor revamp which cost around £1million.

To make better use of available space and to maximise beautiful sea views, the existing restaurant and bar were switched around.

A total of 15 bedrooms in the hotel have been done up so far, with some feature fireplaces uncovered and furniture replaced.

A new conservatory is planned to create more seating with access to the gardens. This stage is set to start when children return to school after the Easter break.

Following that, the final stage will be to complete the accommodation - although a date has yet to be set for that.

A spokesperson for the Hunstanton hotel told the Lynn News that staff are over the moon to have the premises open to the public again.

“They are all super excited and have been involved from the start, helping out with the renovation and seeing it all come together. A real team effort,” they said.

“They are so happy that a local family have taken ownership and are investing in the future.

“We are getting great feedback from our customers, they love the new fresh look and we have gained so many more visitors all wanting to take a look and try the new menu.

“We want to attract locals and holiday makers.”

The Golden Lion was the centre point of the vision of Henry L’estrange in the mid-1800s as he looked to create a new seaside resort.

It was the only building between the village of Heacham and the lighthouse on the cliffs for more than 14 years.

Originally called The New Inn, The Golden Lion has welcomed visitors for nearly 180 years.

The spokesperson added: “The Golden Lion is possibly the most iconic building, a feature of the Hunstanton green. It has been a privilege to give it the love and attention it deserves.

“Hunstanton is a traditional seaside resort and we hope our investment reflects well on the rest of the town, enhancing the customer experience.

“We are collecting historical artifacts to showcase, so any contributions to this would be most welcome.”
