Hopes for Swaffham swimming pool boosted through Breckland letter

Campaigners hoping for a new swimming pool in Swaffham have received a letter of support from Breckland Council for a new facility.

The leader of the council, Sam Chapman-Allen, sent a personal letter to Sarah Skinner, chairwoman of the Campaigning for a Swaffham Swimming Pool group.

The letter said: “As a district council, we are very supportive of initiatives which promote healthy lifestyles and enhance local leisure opportunities for residents and visitors.

“I agreed to send this letter of support for your efforts to deliver a swimming pool in the town.

“It is intended that this letter can demonstrate that the district council is supportive of your work when you are talking to potential funders, supporters and sponsors.”

It comes after members of the pool campaign group had attended a Breckland cabinet meeting, which was held at Swaffham in June.

Swaffham’s Breckland councillor Ed Colman said it was a “really positive outcome” for the town.

“There have been misconceptions about Breckland’s position regarding a swimming pool in Swaffham, from my point of view the position is now very clear.

"We [Breckland Council] will not being delivering or funding a pool in Swaffham but would never stand in the way of someone else who wishes to do so.

“I look forward to seeing how the Swimming Pool Association’s plans come together over the coming months and wish them all the very best."
