King’s Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital charity launches EPIC Moves, Better Lives appeal to bring transformative support to patients

Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital has launched an exciting new appeal to enable extra support for its patients.

The QEHKL charity has launched EPIC Moves, Better Lives, aiming to raise £20,000 to bring transformative reconditioning and exercise therapy directly to hospital patients.

Working in partnership with EPIC Norfolk, a social enterprise dedicated to improving lives through physical activity, the appeal will support frail and cognitively impaired patients by funding specialised mood-boosting exercise sessions designed to help people stay active, build strength and maintain independence.

Each year, approximately 1,400 patients at the QEH are affected by dementia and frailty. For these patients, exercise therapy has proven benefits – it eases symptoms associated with dementia, reduces the need for medication to manage sleep, mood, and anxiety, and encourages engagement and movement.

This is where EPIC Moves, Better Lives can make a real difference, providing patients with therapies that improve their quality of life and elevate their experience at QEH, the hospital said.

Dr. Katie Honney, clinical director for integrated care of older persons and clinical lead for the charity appeal, said: “We are immensely grateful to everyone who supports this vital campaign.

“With these funds, patients living with dementia and frailty will benefit from tailored therapies that improve their physical health and enhance their psychological wellbeing.”

Rachel Burridge, consultant nurse for frailty, shared the impact she’s seen first-hand: “Exercise therapy lifts our patients’ spirits, helping them regain balance, and stay engaged and positive.

“It is wonderful to see them reminisce about past sports and hobbies with the EPIC Norfolk exercise specialists. This programme makes their hospital stay more enjoyable and empowering.”

The QEHKL Charity is calling on individuals and local organisations to help reach the £20,000 target and bring the lasting benefits of exercise therapy to patients.

The programme will not only offer physical benefits but will allow staff to share best practice across the trust, contributing to a culture of enhanced, compassionate care, the hospital said.

Support them today

In asking for support, the hospital said: “Every donation, no matter the size, will help bring the EPIC Moves, Better Lives appeal to life, making a meaningful impact on the hospital experience for our most vulnerable patients.”

Those interested in supporting the initiative can contact the Charity Team at Charity@qehkl.nhs.uk.

Sam Taylor, charity manager, added: Together, with your generosity, we can continue to transform the quality of care available to patients, ensuring a brighter, healthier future for all who rely on The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Lynn. We are a small charity with a big heart, and every donation helps.”
