Hospital Radio Lynn marks a milestone anniversary as it celebrates 50 years of music and memories at Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Our town’s hospital radio station has reached a milestone birthday.
Hospital Radio Lynn, the dedicated radio station broadcasting to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, marked its 50th anniversary on Wednesday.
Since relocating to the hospital site in 1980, the station has consistently been a source of comfort, entertainment, and news for patients, staff, and visitors, evolving through decades to remain an integral part of hospital life.
Originally established to serve the three hospitals of Lynn – St James, Hardwick Road, and The General Hospital – the station has advanced into a modern broadcasting service, accessible online and through Alexa.
David Llewellyn, chair of Hospital Radio Lynn, said: “Celebrating our 50th anniversary is a monumental achievement for Hospital Radio Lynn and the broader community we serve.
“This milestone highlights the lasting impact of radio in uplifting spirits, entertaining, and bringing people together, especially during challenging times.
“The pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, pushing us to innovate and adapt while remaining committed to our mission of brightening the days of those within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
“I’m incredibly proud of our journey, our resilience through the pandemic’s impact, and our community’s unwavering support.”
The station’s longevity is a testament to its dedicated volunteers.
In honour of its 50th anniversary, Hospital Radio Lynn hosted a day of special broadcasts from 7am on Wednesday.
Listeners were encouraged to call in with song requests, entering them into a draw to win an Amazon Echo Dot.
Hospital Radio Lynn is inviting new volunteers to join its team, offering opportunities in presenting, ward request collection, and technical operations.
The challenges of the pandemic, including a significant impact on donations, highlighted the importance of community support for Hospital Radio Lynn.
As the station looks forward to the future, it continues to appeal for donations to be able to fulfill its mission of providing care and entertainment.
Support from the community is vital for maintaining and upgrading equipment and expanding the music library.
