Man discovers scouts name on war memorial in Terrington St John and shares his story
A man who went to pay his respects at a war memorial in Terrington St John noticed that a 15-year-old scout was one of the 15 World War One and Two casualties listed.
Mike Lister visited the memorial and noticed the name and told the Lynn News how Scout Arthur Donald Dawson ended up on the memorial.
He explained that around 1,000 Scouts were deployed in World War One on the east coast to carry out duties such as coast guards, sending signals and delivering messages.
Scouts were working and living in the Lynn area around the River Ouse.
Mike said: “It was here, following the rallying call to serve his country, that 15-year-old Boy Scout Arthur Donald Dawson took up his duties.
“Sadly it would not be for long, for as a report at the time states, he befell a tragic accident in December 1914 and died days later.”
He added: “It is fitting that we cherish the memory of those whose names are recorded but let us also take time to seek out in our churchyards and cemeteries those who also rallied to the call and paid the ultimate sacrifice yet can so easily be forgotten.”
