Hundreds enjoy day of sport at Downham Market event
Sunday saw scores of people gather to take place in the annual Downham Games, which were held at the town’s Memorial Field.
Children and adults were encouraged to take part in various exercises, including; rugby, yoga, archery, running and cycling.
The games are held every summer and are an attempt to encourage residents to take up a sport or increase the amount of sporting activity they do.
Frances Rayner, who organises the event is into fitness herself and wants other people to reap the benefits of getting involved with sport.
She has visited local schools to tell them about the games and was met with enthusiasm.
She said: “We get busier every year. It was originally set up as an Olympics tribute in 2012, but people loved it and we just kept going.
“Our social media has been flooded with positive messages.
“We might need more volunteers next year to make sure everything runs smoothly, there was up to 1000 people there.”
The weather didn’t disappoint as attendees were treated to an athletics competition and a weight lifting demonstration from local gym Fitness Space.
A representative from Fitness Space, which was built last year said: “Our motto is never train alone.
“Today we have been handing out free gym sessions for locals, people are so much more into fitness than years ago and we want to help them achieve their body goals.”
In a society where technology has taken over from a lot of leisure forms, Frances thinks it’s more important than ever to get kids moving.
She told the Lynn News: “It’s the world we live in.
“There are lots of children who play on games consoles, iPads and spend a lot of time on the internet.
“My goal is to get people outdoors instead, so we would like to keep this a free event-but also something that is professional.”
