A Hunstanton charity group is hoping to hand over nearly £20,000 to good causes over the coming months, following its latest event.

Thousands of supporters attended the town’s annual Kite and Classic Car Festival, organised by its Rotary Club, at Smithdon High School on Sunday.

And club president John Crofts, who was also one of the event’s main organisers, said they had been fortunate to hold the festival at all.

He said: “Whenever you plan an outdoor event, you’re always worried about the weather.

“Had it been the week before, we would have almost certainly cancelled.

“But it was lovely, a delightful day. The wind was about the right speed for the kite flyers to give them some interest.”

Around 3,000 people are estimated to have attended the event, which raises funds for the Norfolk Hospice Tapping House, as well as other good causes including local scout groups and Lynn’s Hospital Radio who help the club to stage the event.

Once costs are accounted for, it is believed the event will raise around £10,000 for club charities, both at home and abroad.

And, when added to the proceeds of the club’s weekend at the Norton Hill Light Railway at Snettisham last month, that sum is set to increase to between £18,000 and £20,000.

Mr Crofts paid tribute to all the groups and individuals who helped to stage the event, including one who travelled from his home in Holbeach on the day of the festival and the two days prior to it to help set out the site.

He said: “There’s a huge number of people who help.

“It restores your faith in humanity that there are people who will put themselves out like that for no benefit to themselves."
