Hunstanton Town Councillors led by the mayor Carol Bower, the Royal British Legion with representatives from Smithdon High School and Hunstanton and District Rotary gathered at the War Memorial in Esplanade Gardens on Monday morning to mark Commonwealth Day.

Mrs Bower read messages from the Queen and Kamalesh Sharma, the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

His excellency’s message included: “Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth provides an opportunity to acknowledge publicly and collectively the continuing success of the Commonwealth in building on common traditions and upholding shared values of democracy, inclusive development, rule of law and human rights, in order to advance opportunities for the development and growth of all, especially our youth.”

Roy Evans, of the RBL read the Commonwealth Affirmation, and in keeping with this year’s theme of A Young Commonwealth, the head boy and girl of Smithdon, Terry Spaans and Chloe Kissock raised the Commonwealth Flag.

Moving to the Town Hall, a two-minute silence was followed by the mayor lighting a symbolic candle that will remain lit for the next 12 months.
