Hunstanton shop team gives £16k to good causes
A team of dedicated fundraisers has handed over more than £16,000 to good causes in West Norfolk thanks to the work of their charity shop.
Volunteers have run the Hunstanton Charity Shop for the past five years and choose which organisations they will support on an annual basis.
They have now presented donations ranging from £200 to £5,000 to six causes.
But managers say more volunteers are needed to help them continue their work.
This year, £5000 donations have been made to the Hunstanton Lifeboat Station, the RSPCA’s centre at East Winch and the Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (NARS).
A further £1000 has been given to the 1st Hunstanton Scouts, £500 to the Snettisham Scouts and £200 to Guide Dogs.
Shop manager Angela Green said: “We are delighted to make these donations to such worthy causes and it wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of our volunteers throughout the year.
“We work with a very small volunteer base and desperately need more helpers to join the team.
“Just a couple of hours a week would make all the difference to us.
“Local charities looking for support can also contact us this way; let us know how we can help but bear in mind we cannot contribute to wages or administration costs for groups, only equipment.
Mrs Green added: “After many years we are saying goodbye to Maureen Penn, who not only worked in the shop but was also our treasurer. We wish her well in her new ventures and will miss her greatly.”
Accepting the donation on behalf of NARS Paul Strutt said: “This money with have an ongoing benefit to so many as we will use it for training.
“It’s like the ‘teaching a man to fish’ situation and we are truly grateful.”
Helmsman Michael Darby from the Lifeboat Station also thanked the Charity Shop and said the money would be used for training on boats and hovercraft in Hunstanton and at the Lifeboat College in Poole.
