Hunstanton tourist centre petition set for launch
A petition which aims to reverse the closure of Hunstanton’s former tourist information centre is set to be launched today.
Campaigners are due to gather outside the town hall between 11am and 3pm in an effort to attract the support of residents, traders and visitors alike.
An online version of the petition is also due to be launched via the change.org campaigning platform.
The petition is demanding the re-establishment of a staffed tourist hub in the town, after the old facility at the town hall was closed during lockdown .
Although an unstaffed site is now open at the Coal Shed Gallery , members of the town’s Civic Society, which is leading the campaign, say they are worried the move could damage the local economy and greater consultation should have taken place before the closure decision was made.
But officials from both the town council and West Norfolk Council have repeatedly defended the decision, insisting social distancing measures could not have been enforced at the old centre.
They also insist the current arrangement is only temporary and a permanent site will be established once again as part of the development of a new library for the town.
They have also argued that more tourists access information about the area via other sources, particularly online.
